Help the refugees keep their dreams alive
Beginning of this year we, Tove, Simon and Emmi, went to a refugee camp in the northern part of Uganda to film our first documentary A Call From Water Tank 6 as part of a school project for the Red Cross Film School in Stockholm. In the Palorinya settlement we followed a woman from South Sudan who had to flee her home country after she had been falsely accused of helping the rebel forces. She told us her story, showed us the pictures of her previous life and shared her concerns about the future. Because the good future she had worked so hard for, vanished the day she had to leave everything behind to save her and her children’s lives.
From a hard working, successful and independent businesswoman, she became a refugee that is dependent on NGO’s. Now she needs to ask for everything that is necessary for her to take care of her family. Only because the people in power in South Sudan can’t agree on topics that seems minor when you realize the consequences of their fighting: thousands of people have been killed and over four million people have fled their home towns to look for safety in a place they don’t know anyone or anything. Where they don’t know if they can start a new future or ever will be able to fulfil their dreams.
The people we met in Palorinya are just a fraction of the 65.6 million forcible displaces people worldwide. The refugee crisis has never been as high as it is now. We know the media reports about this problem on a daily basis, but – maybe because of that – the interest in the wellbeing and future of these people seems so low. Take for example South Sudan, the world leaders have given up on the country because the government has been fighting over decades. But by giving up helping the people in power find peace, you give up on the 12 million South Sudanese to follow their dreams. And that seems so unfair to us. Because nevertheless the circumstances, nobody should stop dreaming. Dreams give you a reason to get up in the morning, to get through a day that might not go the way you like, to simply keep going nevertheless the struggles you face.
We believe dreams are important for everyone, but maybe even more for people who don’t know what life will bring them because they live in a refugee camp. Therefore we want to support UNHCR in the good work they do around the world. They are responsible for most refugee camps filled with people still dreaming of a better future. We want these people to feel as comfortable as possible during their time away from home. We want them to keep on dreaming and hopefully even fulfil them.
So today our dream is that you will help them keep their dreams alive.
Thank you so much for your support.
